CMV Convoy for Kids
The streets around Adelaide had an unmistakable buzz about them on Sunday 23 May, as the 2010 CMV Convoy for Kids got underway.
A definite highlight of the Novita calendar, the 18th Convoy saw about 250 South Australian children with disabilities taken for an exciting ride in a big rig, truck, post van or fire engine on a ring route around the city and North Adelaide.
A Convoy Carnival entertained the crowds from 9am in Wikaparndo Wirra (Park 22) in the South Parklands, featuring a Truck Show ‘n’ Shine, live entertainment by Andy Seymour & the Rockits and Rohan & Polly, face painting, clowns, and a jumping castle.
The Convoy was waved off by Lord Mayor Michael Harbison at 10.30am, before travelling in an anti-clockwise ring route around the city and North Adelaide.
Novita has pleasure in thanking its sponsor, CMV Group, for making this event possible for the enjoyment of not only Novita’s families, but also the South Australian community. Thanks also to Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and AV Style for their support.
Novita also sincerely appreciates the participation of the big-hearted truckies who volunteer their time - and their trucks – each year to put dazzling smiles on little faces.

The history of Convoy for Kids

The very first Convoy for Kids was held in August 1993. The idea came from Adelaide truck driver Colin Burford, who had heard about a similar event being held interstate and thought it would be great to bring it to Adelaide.
The inaugural event took three months to organise, with the original organising committee made up of staff from Novita (then the Crippled Children’s Association), the Transport Worker’s Union, the Lions Club of Elizabeth, Elizabeth City Centre Management, SAPOL and Colin Burford.
The committee had no idea how successful this new event would be – and had such an amazing surprise when more than 400 rigs turned up to take 200 children for the ‘ride of a lifetime’ from Kurralta Park Shopping Centre to Elizabeth City Centre! Thousands of families also lined the route and enjoyed the carnival atmosphere, helping the event to raise an incredible $31,000.
Today, Novita’s Convoy for Kids is one of South Australia's favourite events in the community calendar - and the event is still organised by a passionate committee dedicated to giving Novita’s children a truly magical day out. All funds raised from the event help Novita to continue supporting these incredible kids well after the excitement of Convoy is over.
Special thanks go to...
A big thank you to generous event sponsors, the CMV Foundation, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and AV Style - and everyone who comes along on the day to help our kids keep on truckin'!
