Walk With Me
Botanic Park turned into a sea of green as 2,000 people of all ages joined together for Dick Smith’s Walk With Me, Australia’s leading event connecting people of all abilities, on Sunday 30 August.
Clients and their families, from Novita Children’s Services, Cara and Polio Australia, united for the Dick Smith Walk With Me, which is part of a series of events being held around the country, coordinated by Ability First Australia. We were thrilled to be joined by special guests Ellie Cole, Walk With Me Australia National Ambassador, Trent Goodrem, South Australian ambassador and our Novita client ambassadors Archie, Tanna and Eddie.
In attendance were also The Right Honourable Lord Mayor Martin Haese, Mr Chris Picton MP, Member for Kaurna and representing the Premier, Nat Cook MP, Member for Fisher and representing the Hon Tony Piccolo and Dr Duncan McFetridge, Shadow Minister for Health, Disabilities and Community Services, all highlighting the importance of support and recognition of diversity within our community.
Walk With Me 2015, the sixth year of the eventin South Australia, took participants on a fully accessible 2.5 kilometre scenic walk from Botanic Park through the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. The walk concluded with registered participants entering into Adelaide Zoo to enjoy the rest of the beautiful Spring afternoon.
Walk With Me is also an opportunity for participants to fundraise, with Dick Smith generously donating an Apple iPad to the highest fundraiser for the event. That honour went to Novita ambassador Archie, who raised $3,427 for Novita! In total the event raised more than $20,000 for Novita, CARA and Polio Australia.
While it is only a short walk for some, it’s challenging for others. Walk With Me redefines the traditional notion of an event challenge. It’s not about running faster, swimming further or cycling longer distances, but a recreational walk that provides an opportunity for children, families, friends and the wider community to come together and celebrate social inclusion in a festive atmosphere.
Clients, families, staff and volunteers all enjoyed a wonderful day. Novita extends its thanks to all those who assisted on the day, including our Ambassador, Trent Goodrem and players from the Central Districts Football team and students from St Peter’s College and St Mark’s College.
Thank you to all those who helped raise funds for Novita and who came out to take part in such a fun and important day.
