Glossary

Complex Communication Needs

Communication problems associated with a wide range of physical, sensory and environmental causes which restrict /limit a person's ability to participate independently in society.

Dysphagia

A weakness and/or lack of co-ordination of muscles that causes difficulty with chewing and swallowing food and fluids.

Interaction

The way things or people relate to each other.

Key Word Signing

The system of hand movement, based on Australasian sign language, that children can use to better ‘say’ what is wanted, with or without speech. Parents and teachers can also use signs to help children understand what is being said to them.

Language

Understanding and using words and the rules of grammar to build sentences.

Literacy

The ability to read and write.

Speech

The sounds used to make up words - also known as 'articulation'. Does not include the understanding of language.

Speech Generating Device

An electronic communication device that produces words and sentences out loud when buttons are pressed.

Videofluoroscopy

An X-ray showing the path taken by food and drink during the process of eating and swallowing.
