Understanding Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common physical disability in childhood, at 1 in 500 births. Cerebral Palsy is a disorder of posture and movement and there may be other challenges for the child such as communication issues, epilepsy, visual, hearing and behavioural issues. In order to work with and assist children living with CP, it is important to have a basic understanding and knowledge of it. This workshop will provide information on the different types of CP and the challenges these may present for the child. We will also work through strategies to support your work with a child living with CP.

This is a half day workshop, or if you are an Allied Health Professional, this will be a full day.

By attending the full day session (recommended for allied health professionals only) you will also learn about:

  • Positioning for function, mobility and play. This will explore early handling and positioning of the young child with CP to support their postural needs and support development of functional skills. This will also include hands-on experience with use of positional and mobility equipment for older children with CP and an introduction to 24-hour postural management.
  • Movement Disorder management. This will provide an overview of current management specifically of spasticity and dystonia of the lower and upper limbs, including discussion on assessment tools used, and management.
