Pilates

Pilates is a dynamic method of exercise, low on impact and big on results. Pilates helps transform the way your body feels looks and performs whilst engaging in the body’s core powerhouse muscles. Pilates enhances your body’s strength, flexibility, balance, posture and co-ordination, and is suitable for a wide range of people in any age group, including those who suffer from back and neck pain.

Aims

  • To achieve a solid stable core/spine
  • To learn exercises while maintaining a good posture

To enable you to use the limbs while achieving this solid core and good posture and to incorporate this into daily life.

Principles

  • Relaxation
  • Concentration
  • Isolation
  • Precision and accuracy
  • Breathing.

All of these components together make the exercise effective.

Anatomy

The cylinder of Stability or Pilates “Powerhouse” is made up of muscles working together to protect the spine.
These muscles are:

  • Transversus abdominus (TA) (the deepest abdominal muscles)
  • Multifidus (a deep back muscle)
  • The pelvic floor muscles
  • The diaphragm.

To begin Pilates at Novita Health we ask you attend a one on one assessment utilising real time ultrasound imaging of the deep trunk muscle. This assessment allows us to prescribe the correct Pilates program for you. Each class is led by qualified, experienced physiotherapists. Our mat classes are 60 minutes in duration. Please wear socks and clothes that allow you to move freely.
