Aquatic therapy

Aquatic therapy (sometimes known as hydrotherapy) provides opportunities for toddlers, children and young people to improve their movement skills, manage their sensory behaviours, and develop swimming and water safety skills.

We have now launched our new aquatic therapy program for 2017.  This program will include targeted and age level programs, group programs, and pathways to swimming, including community swimming lessons/programs and competition swimming.  These programs will be held at a number of sites around inner and outer metro Adelaide.

Baby and Toddlers

Tadpoles
Early learning program

Who for: A fun and interactive group for children aged up to 4 years old.

Parents/carers will be supported to learn how to use water based activities to support the development of their child’s movement skills. These activities also include opportunities to practice communication, play and social skills in the water.
The group is led by aquatic therapists (physio, OT, and/or/Speech pathologist)

Requirements: parent or carer must accompany child into the pool.

Preschool and school age

Octopus
Sensory- motor program – individual program

Who for: children with Autism and other sensory disorders where the child goals are more related to their sensory behaviours.

An experienced therapist uses a sensory motor approach to improve a child’s ability to interpret and use sensory input. The sensory properties of the aquatic environment are ideal for this approach.

Requirements: a sensory profile/assessment maybe required prior  to commencing program

Starfish
Motor skill development – individual program

Who for: for children with delayed or limited movement skills whose goals are related to development of movement skills

Exercise in water is fun for all children and for those children with delayed or limited movement skills it provides a great medium to work in to achieve mobility goals. An experienced therapist uses the properties of water to work towards development of movement skills and introduce water safety skills.

Requirements:

  • Child is able to and willing to follow instructions
  • A land based assessment maybe required prior to being in the pool

Sea-dragons
Therapeutic individual therapy program

Who for: child, adolescent and young adults with significant limitations of movement

For the child, adolescent and young adults with a physical disability and/or limited ability to move, being in the water provides them with greater freedom of movement that they may not otherwise have on land. This individual aquatic therapy program led by an aquatic therapist, provides ongoing opportunities to continue to explore, improve and/or maintain their movement abilities.  Freedom of movement in the water may also help to address pain and discomfort issues.

Requirements: Requires a land based assessment prior to being in the pool

Working towards swimming

Dolphins
Transitional group program – Working towards swimming

Who for: children whose goals are to transition to swimming lessons

Exercise in water is fun with other children – this program supports children and adolescents to continue to develop and build on  their mobility skills and water safety skills and introduce basic swim skills.  This group will be led by an experienced therapists and/or allied health assistant.

Requirements: child needs to be safe and independent in the water.  The child needs to

  • Enjoy being in the water
  • Able to follow instructions
  • Can put face in the water and blow bubbles
  • Can swim with floaties on
  • Able to float on their back
  • Independently move in the pool –  e.g. 3m/5m torpedo

Sea-Lions
Transitional program – Working towards swimming
Individual program

Who for: a child whose goals are to learn to swim but does not yet have the ability to participate in community based swimming lessons

An experienced therapist or swim instructor skills provides this transitional program.  The aim of this program is for the child to develop confidence and water skills to be ready to move onto swimming lessons.

Requirements:

  • Able to and willing to follow instructions
  • Enjoys being in the water
  • Kicking and/or paddling with floaties on
  • Can put face in the water and blow bubbles
  • Requires a land based assessment prior to being in the pool

Connection to community swimming

ConnectABILITY

Who for: children ready for community based swimming programs and/or keen to be involved in  competition swimming

ConnectABILITY’s Recreation officer will work with children and young people to provide assistance to help find the most suitable   community swim program for your child

Pathways may range from  your local swimming centre to competition swimming including classification to build our future Paralympians, school sport, local club events, state and national swimming events.

Appointment can be arranged at any of the Novita offices, homes or schools.
