Home and Building Modification
Being able to move safely and easily around your home, school and the community is an important part of day-to-day life. Individuals with disability may have a range of different needs for their environment that may not be met by their existing home or other environments. Home and Building Modifications can be a small or large change to a building to make it safer and more functional for an individual.
Home Modifications can be a small, temporary change to a home e.g. a portable ramp or different taps. They can also be larger structural changes to make it easier to move about if you are unsteady on your feet, or use equipment like wheelchairs and shower chairs e.g. wider doorways, showers that are easier to wheel in and out of or lower kitchen benches. Home Modifications can also involve “Environmental Control Systems”, which is technology that can increase your independence in accessing electronics in your home and ranges from electronic door openers/closers, light control and recreation.
Novita’s Occupational Therapists are skilled at working with individuals to identify options to make use of your environment easier, safer and more independent.
Going to a new school is an exciting and sometimes daunting activity. Novita’s Occupational Therapists are able to work with you, your child and their school to identify how your child can be as safe, independent and involved as possible including looking at the setup of your child’s classroom, the school grounds and toilet facilities.
Novita offers a consultation service to assist in the design of new buildings. Our specially skilled Occupational Therapists are able to consider the environmental needs of individuals or groups of individuals living with disability. From recommendations on function design including the width of passageways and doors, access into the home and bathroom design for safe and functional use; to electronic technology (Environmental Control Systems) to enable independent control of home electronics including door opening/closing, lighting and recreation, our Occupational Therapists can work with individuals and home designers to provide recommendations to maximize the safety and function of home, school and community environments.
The NDIS may be able to fund home modifications for eligible participants. For complex home modifications, Novita has therapists who are qualified as NDIA Approved Assessors for Complex Home Modifications.
