Using visual strategies to support children’s learning

Have you noticed kids in your class or learning environment who:

  • Can’t seem to follow instructions all of the time?
  • Have trouble starting or finishing activities that are presented?
  • May have a diagnosis of ASD or a receptive language disorder?

These are some signs that may mean these children would benefit from the use of visual supports to help them learn.

The use of visual supports is a common way to support children with ASD or other difficulties to access learning and play based experiences. While most of us are familiar with choice boards, routine strips and daily schedules, did you know that there are many ways to adapt children’s learning environments to best support visual learning?

As professionals working with children it is important that we have the strategies to understand individual children’s learning preferences to create visual supports that are effective, meaningful and lead to the best possible outcomes for the child.
