When we first shared Scarlette’s story in April 2024, she was celebrating incredible milestones in her journey with cerebral palsy.
With support from the Novita therapy team, Scarlette had learnt to stand up by herself and had made enormous progress with her motor skills, supporting her to become more independent in her everyday life.
Since then, Scarlette has continued to make remarkable progress, particularly with her communication. Supported by her occupational therapist, Chloe, she now confidently uses her augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to express her needs, thoughts and ideas. Scarlette independently reaches for her device, navigates familiar pages and continues expanding her communication every week.
Scarlette has also achieved more important milestones in her independence. She is learning to spit, enabling her to brush her teeth and improving her willingness to try new foods to increase the variety in her diet. She has also improved her balance on stairs, confidently using a handrail and experiencing fewer trips during therapy sessions.
Chloe says Scarlette's progress has been driven by the unwavering support of her family.
"They are always so positive about therapy and keen to try new ideas. Scarlette’s mum embraced the AAC device straight away and celebrates every achievement, whether it's trying a new food or mastering a new skill. Scarlette's younger sister often joins our sessions, providing wonderful encouragement and modelling. Having such an engaged family around her has made a huge difference to the progress she's achieved."
