Therapy Services

Acquired Brain Injury Program

This specialist program is designed for kids, young people and adults with an acquired brain injury, often as the result of a medical event such as a brain tumour, or a trauma such as a motor vehicle accident. Following acute care in hospital, a multidisciplinary team of family service coordinators, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech pathologists, allied health professionals and medical rehabilitation specialists work with you and your family to establish a coordinated approach to therapy support.

Aquatic Therapy

Water therapy is designed to address both movement skills and sensory disorders.  Toddlers, kids, young people and adults seeking support with their movement work with our physiotherapists on strengthening and fitness, while those living with sensory disorders work with our occupational therapists. One-on-one and group therapy sessions are available.

Developmental Educators

A Developmental Educator is an allied health professional specialising in assisting clients with functional life skills, goal-setting, and physical and emotional well-being. They can provide various forms of therapy, assess developmental and behavioral needs, and collaborate with clients and their support network to achieve individualised goals, primarily for people with disabilities across various age-groups and conditions.

Early Childhood Intervention

With a focus on the early years, Novita’s Early Childhood Intervention team works with young kids and their families, providing support to parents and caregivers of young kids living with disability or developmental delay. Services are tailored to the individual needs of your child with the key aim of developing their potential in collaboration with their primary carers.

Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiologists support clients in their everyday life through exercise, lifestyle and behaviour modifications. Exercise is our form of medicine, and by expertly prescribing this to our clients, we are able to support clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle, combat sedentary behaviour and assist them with health-related complications that may stem from living with physical or intellectual disability.

Family Support

We are committed to families, and recognise that they are central to the wellbeing of their children. Family Support services provided by Novita play a vital part in ensuring the wider needs of families are met. Family support services are provided by social workers or family service coordinators. Services that are available through Family Support include case management, counselling, parent programs and groups.

Medical services

The medical services required by children with physical disabilities are a specialised area of paediatrics. The purpose of this page is to give you a chance to meet some of the paediatric specialists we can introduce you to as well as a better understanding of some of the medical services available for your child.

Occupational Therapy

Novita’s experienced occupational therapists can assist kids, young people and adults who are experiencing sensory issues or challenges with their movement, play, personal care, sleep, vision, independent living skills (such as shopping or transport), participation at preschool, school or in the workforce. We facilitate therapy and strategies to help kids, young people and adults living with a disability to play and participate to their full potential, drawing on equipment and other technologies as support tools.

Physiotherapy

Our expert team of physiotherapists offer movement and mobility therapies for babies, kids, young people and adults living with physical and intellectual disabilities and progressive disorders, as well as post-injury. We work closely with you and your family to monitor and treat movement disorders, muscle and pain issues, utilising mobility and positional equipment, such as walkers, and therapeutic splinting.

Physical Rehabilitation Program

This program provides specialist therapy services for kids, young people and adults at a time when an intensive program is needed. This might be following medical intervention, such as surgery, for those experiencing movement disorders or requiring short-term rehabilitation. This multi-disciplinary team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, allied health professionals and medical rehabilitation specialists who support kids, young people, adults and their families.

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, contemporary approach to developing positive life changes for clients living with disability who use harmful behaviours or behaviours of concern (BOCs). Positive Behaviour Support involves information gathering and implementation through the client’s entire support network – including caregivers, family, educators, and medical professionals, all brought together by the Novita Positive Behaviour Support practitioner in a Behaviour Support Plan.

Psychology

Novita’s psychologists offer behavioural, cognitive (learning) and mental health support to kids, young people and adults to support their mental, emotional, social and behavioural development.

Rehabilitation services

Sometimes children need special care when their physical abilities become impaired due to a major injury, illness or operation. This special care is called rehabilitation and Novita provides rehabilitation services that aim to improve the physical abilities of children in this situation. This page briefly outlines Novita’s specialist rehabilitation programs and answers some commonly raised questions.

Social Work / Family Support

Novita social workers work with kids, young people, adults and their families to empower you to achieve your goals, and support positive relationships during times of crisis and hardship. Family support services include case management and counselling, as well as parent programs and groups to assist family members who provide care for kids living with disability.

Speech Pathology

Speech pathology therapy can assist babies, kids, young people and adults living with disability who experience issues with eating and drinking, such as chewing and swallowing problems, as well as other challenges with their communication.  These challenges may include problems speaking, difficulties understanding language, or support with non-verbal communication, such as learning how to use language through signing and symbols.
